Check ups and dental cleans

At South Cairns Dental, we welcome all new patients. We recommend all new patients begin with a thorough check up and clean. At this visit, we take sufficient time to:

  • Examine your teeth
  • Examine your gums and screen for gum disease
  • Assess your jaw joints
  • Take all the necessary x-rays and photographs
  • Scale and clean to remove plaque and tartar from around your teeth and gums
  • Provide a safe and effective fluoride treatment

As with most things in life, when it comes to your teeth, prevention is far better than cure. By attending regularly for your check ups and cleaning, we can recognise and treat even the earliest signs of any problems to ensure they don’t progress. This invariably saves you both time and money, and ensures you keep your own natural teeth looking great and functioning comfortably for many years to come.

Enjoy healthy teeth for life – come in for your regular 6 monthly check up and cleans. Call us now to book!

Fillings

Dental decay (commonly known as ‘holes’ or ‘cavities’) is one of the most common health issues we face as a population. Dental decay, if left untreated, will inevitably progress through your tooth until the nerve dies and infection develops. At this point, the only options for treatment are either root canal therapy or extraction. By treating dental decay early, we save a lot of time, effort and money. To treat early tooth decay, we remove all of the decayed portion of your tooth and replace this with a safe and effective filling material. We have a range of different filling materials available to suit all applications and strengths.

Extractions

We understand that having a tooth removed can be a serious source of anxiety for our patients. Our team is highly trained in both removing any teeth as comfortably as possible, and also ensuring our patients are as relaxed as possible during the process. If you need to have a tooth removed, we will take the time to discuss any reservations you may have and what additional steps we may be able to take to ensure we overcome these together.

Wisdom teeth

Unfortunately for the majority of the population, wisdom teeth are a inconvenient reality of early adulthood. Most people get their wisdom teeth from their late teens to early 20s, and these are a common cause of pain and nasty infection. For some of our patients, conservative treatment may be all that is needed to solve their wisdom tooth problem, whilst for others removing the offending wisdom tooth may be necessary. If you think you may be having problems with your wisdom teeth, schedule a consultation with us today! We will individually asses your wisdom teeth, take the essential x-ray then and there, and provide you with a costing for your treatment.

Dental implants

Dental implants are one of the most natural and long lasting methods to replace a missing tooth or teeth. They are fixed in place and will not come out or move when you eat or speak. They look, feel and function just like natural teeth! Dr Alex has undergone extensive overseas training in dental implant treatments and associated surgical procedures. If you have been thinking about replacing missing teeth, come and see us for a consultation, where we can discuss a tailored approach to getting your tooth or teeth back again!

Invisalign!

Want straight teeth? Don’t like the look of ugly metal braces? Invisalign may be the answer for you! Invisalign is a virtually invisible orthodontic system to straighten your teeth. The treatment time and cost varies depending on your individual situation, however can be as quick as 14 weeks! The best step forward is to schedule a consultation where we can chat about a tailored treatment to enhance your smile!

Root canal therapy

Root canal therapy is required when the nerve in your tooth is inflamed beyond repair or has died. This may occur as a result of deep dental decay or even getting a knock to your tooth. If this is required, your dentist will remove the nerve from your tooth and replace it with a comfortable filling material. Despite what you may have heard, the majority of root canal treatments are completed under anaesthesia without any pain whatsoever! Root canal treatment can absolutely be a safe and long lasting treatment available to patients wanting to save their own natural teeth and avoid tooth removal.

Whitening

With a strong focus in society these days on an attractive smile, we understand and appreciate aesthetics and will work with you to achieve your proudest smile yet. Professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to brighten your smile. The procedure is extremely straight forward and takes very little of your time. The changes for the majority of our patients have been dramatic. Talk to us today about whitening!

Cosmetic veneers

In a similar fashion to false fingernails, veneers are thin shells of porcelain which are bonded to your teeth to give the appearance of a beautiful smile. Veneers can correct gappy teeth, crooked teeth, discolored/stained teeth, short and worn teeth. Veneers have the potential to last many many years if done correctly, and the results can quite literally be life changing.

The treatment process takes two appointments:

First appointment: Impressions of your teeth will be taken to ensure the veneers are made to fit your teeth properly and suit your individual smile perfectly. Your teeth will be prepared for the veneers, which may involve shaving a small amount of enamel away from your teeth to ensure the final veneers are not too bulky or out of place. We use high precision magnification and the highest quality porcelain available which allows us to keep the amount of enamel removal to a minimum, and sometimes it is not needed at all. Whilst we are waiting for your custom veneers to be made in the laboratory, we will fit you with temporary veneers to keep you smiling.

Final appointment: Your temporary veneers will be gently removed, and your new permanent veneers bonded to your teeth. Any adjustments needed are made then and there, and we will run through how you can best take care of your new smile.

Crowns and bridge work

If your tooth is broken, decayed or has a really big filling, it might need a crown. A crown is a cap which is custom made to fit over your existing tooth, reinforcing it and helping prevent further breakdown. If your tooth needs a crown, the sooner we do this, the better. A crown will save you money in the medium-long term, help you keep your own natural teeth and avoid dentures or other tooth replacement options.

If you have a missing tooth next to a tooth needing a crown, a bridge may be a superior solution for you. A bridge has a false tooth spanning off the crowned tooth, replacing the missing tooth. Bridges are permanently fixed in place, cannot be removed and look/feel/function just like natural teeth!

Dentures

Tired of your old rocking dentures? Thinking of dentures for the first time? Maybe you want some implants to anchor down your denture? Whatever your query, our team is trained to provide you with the very best in teeth replacement solutions.

Childrens dentistry

Your child’s early experiences at the dentist are so important in shaping their future attitude toward their dental health. Fun, positive early experiences at the dentist are the best way to ensure your child does not develop any unnecessary long term dental phobias. Early diagnosis and treatment of any problems with your child’s teeth can help reduce the time/money/effort/discomfort associated.

Mouthguards

Everyone playing any sport that has the potential to cause trauma and damage to their mouth should be wearing a professionally fitted mouthguard. Mouthguard’s help  prevent accidents such as chipped/broken teeth, cuts and lacerations to the lips/gums, which can be both painful and costly to repair. Your custom fitted mouthguard may also reduce your risk of serious injuries such as jaw fractures and concussion.
