Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are basically molar teeth which grow at the very back of your mouth. Unfortunately for the majority of the population, wisdom teeth are an inconvenient reality of early adulthood. Most people get their wisdom teeth from their late teens to early 20s.

It is very common for wisdom teeth to cause one or more of the following issues:

Pain
Swelling
Bad breath and/or bad taste
Infection
Crowding other teeth in your smile
Holes and gum disease in the tooth directly in front of the wisdom tooth

For some of our patients, conservative treatment may be all that is needed to solve their wisdom teeth problems. For others, removing the offending wisdom tooth is often necessary. As a general rule, if your wisdom tooth does need to be removed, the sooner the better. Delaying removal can increase the difficulty and cost of the procedure.

Wisdom Teeth FAQs:

I am having problems with my wisdom tooth/teeth, what do I do?	Call us to organise a consultation with one of our dentists. At this first visit, we will assess your wisdom teeth, take an X-ray and let you know if they need to be removed. If they do, we will give you a detailed costing of the procedure and find an appointment that suits you.
How much does it cost to have a wisdom tooth removed?	The cost ranges from $200 – $400 for us to remove the tooth under a local anaesthetic whilst you are awake in the chair. In some circumstances, you may need to be referred to the Oral Surgeon to be put to sleep and have them removed, which will vary the price.
I am anxious about having them removed, what can be done?	Take comfort in knowing you are in the best possible hands, our dentists and support staff are highly trained to manage your wisdom teeth. We can also prescribe for you to have a sedative prior to the appointment, which will help you relax!
	Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed? No, not always. Some people have enough room for the wisdom tooth to erupt through the gum normally and can brush, floss and keep it clean. However, this is not all that common!
My wisdom teeth are NOT sore, can they still cause problems?	Of course! The majority of the issues that we see caused by wisdom teeth do not always cause pain. That is why it is very important to have your wisdom teeth assessed and x-rays taken.
